Kabiria Fresh Mushroom Farm grows and sells fresh mushrooms and farming equipment in Kenya, and teaches hands-on mushroom farming classes.
Kabiria Fresh Mushroom Farm is a mushroom farm in Nairobi, Kenya. We grow button and oyster mushrooms, supply homes, hotels and restaurants in Nairobi and across all 47 counties in Kenya, sell the equipment needed to start a mushroom farm, and train farmers, students and groups.
We do not just sell mushrooms. We hand you the skill to grow them.
Button and oyster mushrooms, grown in clean and humid rooms and harvested only when they are ready, so that every pack arrives firm and fresh.
Fresh button and oyster mushrooms in 250 g packs and by the kilo, along with growing bags, spawn and the equipment you need to start your own farm.
Hands-on classes on spawn, substrate, fruiting rooms, harvesting and selling, from a working farm rather than a classroom.
Kabiria started in a rented room off Kabiria Road with one bag of oyster spawn, a borrowed steriliser, and five friends who had read about mushroom farming and none of whom had grown a commercial crop.
What we had instead was patience and one shared idea: a crop that needs no soil, no tractor and very little land was the answer a lot of young farmers around Nairobi were looking for. Mushrooms need humid air and clean substrate. Everything after that was something we learned on the job, and we did — losing batches, fixing the airflow by hand, learning to tell by smell when a room had turned.
The farm now runs on several growing rooms on the same quiet stretch of land. We supply homes, hotels and restaurants across Nairobi, we sell the bags, spawn and tools to start a farm, and we run the classes that teach other people to do exactly what we did.
The first bag
One bag of oyster spawn, colonised in a storeroom and fruited in the dark. It worked, and we did not stop.
The first harvest
Twelve kilos, sold to neighbours and one restaurant in Riruta. That single order paid for the next batch of spawn.
The first class
Twelve people came for a one-day workshop. Most of them are still growing mushrooms today.
The wholesale shelf
Hotels and supermarkets started ordering by the week, which is what turned a good harvest into a farm.
Five friends started this farm. Seven of us run it now, Kenyan and Burundian hands working in the same growing rooms. Turn a card to meet the person behind the work.

Four steps between a bag of spawn and a plate, all of them done on the farm.
Spawn
The seed of the mushroom, bought clean or made here. Nothing on this list works without it.
Substrate
Wheat straw, chopped and pasteurised in a drum until it holds together and runs clean.
Growing room
Dark, humid, with fresh air on a timer. This is the room that decides whether a crop is good or merely average.
Harvest and pack
Cut by hand in the cool of the morning, weighed and packed the same day.
Three things that decide every order we pack.
A mushroom is picked, weighed and packed inside one morning. Anything that cannot make that trip does not leave the farm.
We sell the bags and spawn we use ourselves, and we will show you how to use them. Guidance is part of the price, not a favour.
Clean farm waste that would rot in a field becomes the growing medium instead. Nothing useful is thrown away.
Picked and packed for homes, hotels and restaurants.
Small, round and firm, our button mushrooms have a mild flavour and hold their shape well, so they are good eaten raw in salads or cooked into soups and sauces.
KES 250 per 250g pack
Soft, meaty and mild oyster mushrooms grown and harvested at our Nairobi farm. They cook in minutes and take on the flavour of whatever you cook them with.
KES 600 per kg
Growing bags, spawn and tools we use ourselves.
A digital meter showing temperature and humidity together, so you can tell whether a growing room is right instead of guessing. The cheapest useful tool in the room.
KES 900 each
A 5-litre pressure sprayer for keeping your mushroom house at the right humidity. A mist that stays suspended, which is what mushroom rooms actually need.
KES 1,800 each
Heavy-duty, heat-resistant polythene bags for oyster mushroom substrate. A pack of 50, made to take hot pasteurised material without tearing.
KES 1,500 per pack of 50
Hands-on classes for beginners and commercial farmers.
A one-day hands-on class where you learn the basics and take home a growing bag.
Three days of training to set up a mushroom house, produce at scale and find buyers.
We bring the class to your group, school or church, or teach over video call.
